West Valley 55+ Golf Course Overseed Schedule for Fall 2026

Most courses in the West Valley's active-adult communities will close for a few weeks this fall while crews seed winter grass. Each one goes down on its own date, and the openings overlap. A small group of courses isn't on the overseed list at all this year. In the middle of all this, on a tentative date of October 17, Sun City's North Golf Course is set to reopen after a renovation planned around using less water. One stated goal of that project is a course that may not need winter overseeding.

So the fall shutdown that golfers here have planned around for years is starting to change. Here is where things stand on September 30 and what to expect through mid-November.

The October calendar, course by course

All dates below come from each community's 2026 schedule. The Recreation Centers of Sun City marks its dates as tentative, and the other schedules can change with the weather, so check your course's live status page before you load the car.

Community Course Closes Reopens
Sun City Willow Brook Sept. 28 Oct. 17
Sun City Lakes East Sept. 28 Oct. 17
Sun City South Oct. 2 Oct. 24
Sun City Riverview Oct. 5 Oct. 26
Sun City Lakes West Oct. 19 Nov. 7
Sun City Willow Creek Oct. 26 Nov. 14
Sun City West Pebblebrook, Echo Mesa, Desert Trails Oct. 1 Oct. 20
Sun City West Grandview, Stardust, Trail Ridge Oct. 22 Nov. 17
Sun City Grand Granite Falls South Sept. 28 Oct. 19
Sun City Grand Cimarron Sept. 30 Oct. 22
Sun City Grand Granite Falls North Oct. 14 Nov. 3
PebbleCreek Eagle's Nest Oct. 5 Oct. 26
PebbleCreek Tuscany Falls East Oct. 12 Nov. 2
Sun City Festival Copper Canyon, Lake and Vista nines Sept. 28 Oct. 16
Sun City Festival Copper Canyon, Mountain nine Oct. 19 Nov. 6
Trilogy at Vistancia Trilogy Golf Club Oct. 4 Oct. 23

For Sun City courses, "reopens" doesn't mean everything goes back to normal that day. The RCSC schedule lists a separate, later date for when carts can leave the cart path, about three weeks after each reopening. For Willow Brook and Lakes East that's November 7, and for South it's November 14.

The Grand's live status page, dated September 30, already shows Granite Falls South closed for overseed, which matches the schedule.

The courses that aren't closing for overseed

Three courses on these schedules are marked "No" for overseeding this fall:

  • Quail Run in Sun City
  • Desert Springs at Sun City Grand. It did have a short closure from Sept. 15 to Sept. 28, but the schedule doesn't say why.
  • Tuscany Falls West at PebbleCreek

None of the schedules explains why these courses are skipping overseed, so it would be a guess to blame water rules. Here's what they mean in practice. In Sun City, Quail Run is the only course with no planned fall overseed closure. At The Grand, Desert Springs reopened Sept. 28 and has no overseed dates after that. At PebbleCreek, Tuscany Falls West stays off the closure list while Eagle's Nest and Tuscany Falls East take turns closing.

Look at PebbleCreek's dates in order. Eagle's Nest is closed from Oct. 5 to Oct. 26. Tuscany Falls East closes Oct. 12, while Eagle's Nest is still down, and reopens Nov. 2. From Oct. 12 to Oct. 26, Tuscany Falls West is PebbleCreek's only course with no overseed closure on the schedule.

Why North's reopening matters more than the date

The RCSC Board approved $2.7 million for the North Golf Course renovation after a unanimous vote. RCSC President Tom Foster said one reason was new Arizona Department of Water Resources requirements on how much water the courses can use, according to the Sun City Independent.

The RCSC project plan lays out the work:

  • About 20 acres of turf removed and replaced with landscaping that uses ADWR-approved, low-water plants
  • The back nine converted to TifTuf Bermuda, a low-water grass. The front nine had already been converted.
  • 13 of the course's 48 bunkers removed, with others raised or reshaped so they're easier to step into and out of

The plan explains why this matters. ADWR is lowering RCSC's water allotment each year to reach an agreed usage goal, and the North project is meant to keep RCSC within its required annual cuts. RCSC estimates TifTuf uses 20 to 25 percent less water than the common Bermuda that was in the fairways. It puts the total savings at 36.7 acre-feet for the TifTuf areas plus 56.25 acre-feet for the turf-conversion areas.

The plan also says the TifTuf areas "may not need to be overseeded in the winter," which would save more water and cut overseeding costs. That's a possibility in the plan, not a decision. The RCSC 2026 overseed schedule still lists North's dates as TBD.

If North does skip overseeding, Sun City would have two courses open through October instead of one.

Sun City West is testing the same grass on a smaller scale. In November 2025, about 2.5 acres of TifTuf, including rough, went in on the ninth fairway at Echo Mesa. Officials are still watching how it performs and whether it helps reduce water use.

Where North stands right now

According to the RCSC Golf Advisory Committee summary from September 10, 2026, the project is "nearing completion." The bunker work finished in August, under budget, and new sod went in around the bunkers to prevent erosion. The TifTuf installation was done in early August. Most fairways were sprigged, and holes 14 and 17 got sod.

The schedule from that report:

  1. October 15: a play date for the Golf Advisory Committee, the Board of Directors and the North Green Committee
  2. October 16: a course tour and a reveal of the renovated Golf Shop and Grill
  3. October 17: the tentative opening date

Sources don't fully agree on the date. The highlights section of the same report lists October 16 as the expected opening, and the Arizona Golf Association's 2026 overseeding schedule shows October 1. As of September 30, RCSC's North course page hasn't posted a specific reopening day. It still says renovations run until fall 2026.

The tentative October 17 reopening is the same day Willow Brook and Lakes East come back, and two days before Lakes West closes on October 19. If those dates hold, Sun City will have more courses open in late October than it has had all month.

What the shifting dates cost at Copper Canyon

At Sun City Festival, the closures line up with a rate change. Copper Canyon Golf Club's 2026 rate table lists the resident 18-hole daily fee as $40 in June through August, $57 in September and October, and $73 in November and December.

The Lake and Vista nines reopen October 16, while the $57 rate still applies. The Mountain nine closes October 19 and reopens November 6, by which point the $73 rate is in effect. If you want to play the Lake and Vista nines, the last two weeks of October fall between the reopening and the price increase.

Mid-October dates off the course

On October 16, the same day as North's tour and Golf Shop and Grill reveal, Sun City West has its own event. The Rec Centers are hosting a Master Plan celebration from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the R.H. Johnson Social Hall. It includes a presentation from BerryDunn, information tables and concept renderings of potential projects. The renderings show potential projects only, and the board vote to adopt the plan is scheduled for October 22. October 22 is also the day Grandview, Stardust and Trail Ridge close for overseed.

Also at R.H. Johnson, the four platform tennis courts were scheduled to be rebuilt between August 3 and October 2, with post-tension slabs, a new playing surface and new nets. Completion hasn't been confirmed yet.

At Sun City Grand, the free 30th-anniversary Fall Street Fair runs October 24 from 4 to 8 p.m., from Palm Center to Adobe Pool, with bands and food vendors. That's during Granite Falls North's closure, which runs from October 14 to November 3.

Early November is busy as the last courses reopen:

  • Nov. 5 and 6: Sun City West Fall Fest at Beardsley Park. Chicago Tribute Experience plays Nov. 5 and Shotgun Willie plays Nov. 6. Gates open at 5 p.m., shows start at 7 p.m., and tickets are $22 per night or $36 for both.
  • Nov. 5, 6 and 8: the PebbleCreek Pickleball Club Fall Classic, which opens the club's November-through-April season
  • Nov. 7: PebbleCreek's 30th annual Home and Garden Tour, open to residents only, from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $25 and benefits the Goodyear Police Department's Shop with a Cop program.

By November 17, when Grandview, Stardust and Trail Ridge reopen, every course on these schedules should be back in play. RCSC courses will still be keeping carts on the path until each one's later cart-path date.

The changes at North show that water limits now affect golf schedules as well as golf budgets. The same is true for homes in these communities, where yards, water use and HOA rules come up when it's time to make a move.
