Estrella Mountain Regional Park Runs on Three Different Clocks This October

If you drive to the Competitive Track on the morning of October 17, where do you park? You can't park there at all. The track's lots and trailheads are closed to regular visitors until October 28. Across the park, two other closures run on their own timelines, and one of them lasts until 2027.

For anyone in Estrella Mountain Ranch who treats Estrella Mountain Regional Park as their backyard trail system, October takes more planning than any other month this fall. Three separate closures overlap now. The Competitive Track closure ends October 28, and the Nature Center's temporary schedule ends October 31. The storm repairs have no posted end date, and the long construction closure will shape the season through the winter.

Three closures on three timelines

Each closure has a different cause, covers a different part of the park, and runs on its own timeline. Here they are side by side, using Maricopa County Parks & Recreation's own notices.

Closure What's affected Cause Scheduled end
Competitive Track Track parking lots and trailheads, open only to special-event traffic A large special event at Phoenix Raceway October 28, 2026
Storm damage Playground and ramadas 7, 10, and 11 Storm on August 17, 2026 No date posted; repairs ongoing
Rainbow Valley and Coldwater trailheads Both trailheads and their parking lot New campground construction March 2027, earlier if construction finishes ahead of schedule

The storm closure is the smallest. The county's storm damage update, last updated October 5, says the turf area, the one-mile pathway, the loop drive, and the other ramadas are all open. If you were planning a family picnic, ramada 7, 10, or 11 is the only thing you'd need to change. The other two closures affect the trails themselves.

Rainbow Valley and Coldwater are still open from other trailheads

The longest closure is also the one most likely to be misread. Rainbow Valley and Coldwater Trailheads have been closed since February 3, 2025. The county's park projects page says they will stay closed through March 2027 while crews build a 50-site campground. The closure covers both trailheads and the parking lot that serves them. The county says trail access remains available from alternate trailheads.

The county lists three alternate starting points, and connector trails link each one to the Rainbow Valley and Coldwater trails:

  • Baseline Trailhead: hikers and mountain bikers
  • Gila Trailhead: hikers only
  • Quail Trailhead: all trail users

Pick your trailhead based on how you travel. Mountain bikers can't use Gila, and riders on horseback can only use Quail. The county also warns that parking is limited at all three alternates. That warning matters more in October than in summer. The weather has cooled, more people are hiking, and from late September until October 28 the Competitive Track lots aren't available to absorb overflow.

The construction will leave the park with more than it had before. The campground is being built where the rodeo arena used to be, as part of the park's 2016 Master Plan. The project includes 50 developed campsites, two restroom buildings with showers, five covered camp host sites, a fenced equestrian trailhead, a designated dog area, a dump station, and improvements to the Rainbow Valley Trailhead itself. When the Rainbow Valley Trailhead reopens, it will be an upgraded trailhead, not just a reopened one.

A NASCAR weekend has the Competitive Track until October 28

The second closure has the shortest timeline and the most unusual cause. The county's Competitive Track notice says the track closed September 28 because of a large special event at Phoenix Raceway and will reopen October 28, 2026. Until then, only event traffic can use the track's parking lots and trailheads. The county says it doesn't manage the event and directs visitors to the raceway for details.

Phoenix Raceway's fall schedule shows what's on the calendar. The Freeway Insurance 500 Weekend runs October 16 through 18 and includes three NASCAR series. According to the raceway's schedule:

  1. October 15, 4 to 7 p.m.: Fan Fest Powered by Freeway Insurance, at Heritage Square and Science Park in downtown Phoenix
  2. October 16, 4:30 p.m.: NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race
  3. October 17, 4:30 p.m.: NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series Timberland Pro 200
  4. October 18, noon: Freeway Insurance 500, the Cup Series race

The county notice doesn't explain how the event uses the park's lots, and the raceway's pages don't either. The two facts that matter for a hiker are on the record. The track and its parking are reserved for event traffic until October 28, and race weekend falls in the middle of that window. If the Competitive Track is your usual Saturday ride or run, use a different trailhead on October 17, along with every other day until the 28th.

The ranger calendar fills the Nature Center's last weeks on reduced hours

This is where the three clocks overlap. The Nature Center is open Wednesday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and closed Sunday through Tuesday. That temporary schedule runs from May 1 through October 31. The county hasn't posted the November hours in the alert. In its last weeks on this schedule, the park's programs and events calendar has a full slate:

  • October 8, 7 to 10 a.m.: Guided Bird Hike with Ranger Eric. Registration required, capped at 10 people.
  • October 10, 6:30 to 8 a.m.: Volunteer-led Bird Walk, with a walk followed by a bird program at the Nature Center. Registration required, capped at 12.
  • October 12, 8 to 10 a.m.: "Life Along the Gila" with Ranger Kevin. Registration required, limit of 20.
  • October 23, 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.: Fitness Hike with Ranger Nikki.
  • October 23, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.: Pollinator Garden Walk with Ranger Nikki.
  • October 30, 8 to 10:30 a.m.: Estrella Seed Toss Event.
  • October 30, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Discovery Station, Spooky Season Critters.

Group sizes are small. The first three programs together have room for 42 people. The October 8 bird hike is tomorrow and takes only 10, so if you want a spot, register through the county calendar today. October 23 and October 30 each have two programs back to back, so you can spend a full morning at the park on either day.

Two of these dates also land within the closure windows. October 12 falls between the two NASCAR-weekend weeks, while the Competitive Track is still reserved for event traffic. October 30 comes two days after the track reopens and one day before the Nature Center's temporary schedule ends. Based on the posted dates, the seed toss is the first program of the season held with the Competitive Track back open.

What November looks like

Once October 28 and October 31 pass, the Competitive Track is scheduled to be open again and the Nature Center's temporary May-through-October schedule will have run its course. The playground and ramadas 7, 10, and 11 stay closed until the county posts otherwise, since the storm repairs have no end date. Rainbow Valley and Coldwater trailheads stay closed for the campground build, and Baseline, Gila, and Quail remain the way in.

The park's next big event is already on the calendar. Aravaipa Running lists its Fat Ox race at Estrella Mountain Regional Park on November 20 and 21, 2026. It offers 48-, 24-, 12-, and 6-hour formats plus 100-mile, 100K, and 50K distances. Even if you've never thought about running for two days, a timed endurance event at your nearest regional park is worth watching from the sidelines.

If those trailhead lots are full on a busy morning, the county suggests White Tank Mountain Regional Park in Waddell and access points along the Maricopa Trail as alternates. Closer to home, Goodyear's trails page lists more than 14 miles of concrete multi-use pathway and 12 miles of unpaved pathway across the city. Within the community, the Estrella Trails Group focuses on trail maintenance and building new trails.

The county says it will post campground progress and any earlier reopening of Rainbow Valley and Coldwater on the park's projects page. That's the page to bookmark this winter.
